Wooden Life is a research project authored by Justo Díaz and Guillermo Pozo that examines the use of engineered wood—mainly CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) and GLT (Glued-Laminated Timber)—in 20 recent collective housing projects built in Spain. The book also includes technical context essays and interviews with key stakeholders—architects, engineers, developers, and manufacturers—who are driving a real transformation in the sector, from forest to city.
Far from a nostalgic or merely environmental approach, the study presents wood as a contemporary solution capable of addressing the main challenges of the construction sector: reducing carbon emissions, industrializing the building process, providing affordable housing, and revitalizing rural areas.
The analysis covers the full lifecycle of the material—from forest management to transformation, transport, and on-site assembly—and tackles key issues such as fire resistance, acoustic performance, current regulations, and hybridization strategies with other materials.
Among the featured projects are works by some of the leading figures in contemporary timber architecture in Spain: Peris+Toral, Lacol, Harquitectes, bosch.capdeferro, Cierto Estudio, Roldán + Berengué, and SUMA arquitectura, among others.
Each project is presented with architectural plans, construction details, structural analysis, and technical data sheets, offering a deep understanding of the construction system and its relationship with the social, urban, and climatic context.
Published in a bilingual format (Spanish-English), Wooden Life spans 256 pages and includes carefully curated graphic documentation, making it an essential tool for anyone designing, researching, or promoting a more sustainable, industrialized architecture that is committed to its territory.
